Importance of non-car space on roads

Dear Sir,

I'd like to pick up on Matthias Bunte's letter in last week's Chronicle concerning noncar facilities on the Congleton Link Road.

It is essential that there is ample space for both pedestrians and cyclists along the whole length.

If the width is adequate, one side should be sufficient and certainly cheaper and less invasive of land than two for the same overall width.

Whether the space should be designated is a moot point, though I'd have thought not, at least initially.

Also, I hope there are sufficient funds for landscaping that provides a habitat for wildlife as well as a calming and positive visual effect for users.

I presume corridors have been considered to enable small animals to retain their natural travel arrangements.
