We do not suffer a lack of reports

Dear Sir,

While reading the long letter from Fiona Bruce MP in last week's Chronicle, which detailed her actions regarding consulting with all her constituents and campaigning to help the disadvantaged, I cannot help but think that actions are no substitute for personal values and beliefs.

Our society suffers not from a lack of reports, well intentioned actions, and strong words, but from a reluctance of its constituents to reflect on their own individual thoughts about these issues.

A tree can only be as strong as its roots allow, irrespective of its impressive foliage, flowers, and berries.

Its roots, however, are mostly invisible and it's only by inspection and investigation that the tree's true health can be ascertained.

At this time of the year, the best gift we can give to our country is to inspect our own roots and if we find them wanting, seek methods of improving their health.

Luckily, roots are not susceptible to outside influences such as air pollution and sometimes merely appreciating their strength and resilience is sufficient for the tree to flourish once again.
